Two partners with Thomas & LoCicero will be serving as panelists in an upcoming conference this Friday, April 20th in Gainesville, FL.  Carol Jean LoCicero and Mark R. Caramanica will be presenting at the Technology, Media & Privacy Law Conference sponsored by the University of Florida Levin College of Law.

Ms. LoCicero will be part of a panel discussing “Protecting Media Sources:  The Legal Standards & Encryption.”  The session will address the ramifications of the federal government denying Freedom of Information Act requests, and state governments denying similar requests, due to privacy and national security concerns.  Panel members will reflect upon when privacy and national security concerns should outweigh access to information, as well as when should the legal framework be amended to provide for greater access.

Mr. Caramanica will be part of a panel discussing “Anonymity in the New Media Landscape:  Free Speech or Invasion of Privacy & Defamation?”  The session will address how entities and individuals have an increasing ability to remain anonymous on new media platforms, testing current policies promoting privacy and free speech.  Panel members will reflect upon when entities or individuals should be allowed to remain anonymous and when they should be unmasked, as well as where the line should be drawn for internet-service providers.

Both Ms. LoCicero and Mr. Caramanica are alumni of the University of Florida Levin College of Law.  Ms. LoCicero was a member of the graduating Class of 1986 and Mr. Caramanica was a member of the graduating Class of 2002.
